Abstract: Prior to the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949, Shanghai was a center of missionary activity in China, with Christian missionaries acting as a bridge linking West and East. They were the vanguard of “Westernization” in China’s most Westernized city, using both persuasion and compulsion to get local clergy and converts to change their lifestyles in accord with Christian values and European practices. They may not have been the most dominant force in Treaty Port-era Shanghai, but their influence was — and in some ways still is — felt in almost every corner of the city.

  黄薇，历史学博士。上海图书馆历史文献中心副研究馆员。上海青年文学艺术联合会理事。上海大学海派文化中心青年研究员。主要研究领域：中国基督教史，上海地方文献。

  Huang Wei received her doctoral degree in history from Shanghai University. She researches history of Chinese Christianity and Shanghai local literature, has published papers including “Fashion, Dress and Social Change: Christianity and Modern Urban Daily Dresses”, “Westerners Coming to China in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Incoming of Western Food in Modern Times”,etc.
